Dell is a technology company that builds products for the public, private, and enterprise sectors in the form of personal computer systems, imaging and printing, and business products and software. The company designs and builds:
- laptops
- PCs
- printers
- scanners
- servers
- software
- TVs
In addition to its technical line of products, Dell also offers the needed accessories like inks and toners and printer paper. The odds are pretty good that somewhere on your desk is a piece of Dell equipment. For a complete line of Dell products visit them online at www.dell.com.
Each piece of hardware that Dell makes has its very own drivers. Drivers are the controllers that communicate between your PC’s operating system and the hardware, acting much like an instruction manual for your computer. The driver will explain to your PC what your new printer’s or keyboard’s or monitor’s capabilities are and how to access these capabilities properly.
These device drivers are usually included with the new product when purchased, on a disk. It’s a good idea to keep these disks in a safe place should you need to reinstall the driver at any point in time on your PC.
How Do You Know When It’s Time to Update Your Drivers?
The general rule of thumb is when stuff stops working, look first at your drivers. Drivers are one of the main causes of loss of functionality with your PC’s hardware (i.e. can’t type on your keyboard, can’t move your mouse, can’t download those yoga videos). Either the original driver became corrupt with the installation or updates to your software, or you just need a newer version of the driver. Any time you install new software or update existing software, there is a possibility that your current drivers will be rendered useless.
Updating Your Dell Drivers
There are a couple of good methods you can use to quickly and easily update those Dell Drivers.
Updating using Windows Update
Go to Windows Update under All Programs in your Start menu and enter your search query in the Update Driver Software window. If Update finds any new drivers your system is missing, it will install them on your PC for you. You can set Windows Update to automatically download and install essential and recommended drivers for your PC.
To set the automatic download feature, open Windows Update (under All Programs in your Start menu) and select Change Settings. You can choose to either have your PC automatically install important and recommended, or just important updates. The nice thing about this is whenever a new driver becomes available for your system, you don’t have to go look for it! Your PC will do the looking and installing for you!
Updating Your Drivers at dell.com
Visit Dell’s driver support page. Here you can search for drivers based on your system’s Service Tag (click here to find out where to look for your product’s service tag), your specific model, or if you have an online account with Dell that already lists your system’s components, you can log in to your account and search that way.
First choose which search you want to perform.
- Search via your Dell's specific Service Tag
- Search via your Dell's specific Model
- List via your online Dell account
Then choose the appropriate search result from the results list, you may have to get pretty specific here to narrow down the results if you aren’t using the Service Tag or an online account.
- Next enter your Operating System in the drop down menu.
- Refine your search by clicking on the specific category (Applications, CD/DVD, Network, etc.) you want to search within for driver updates. Or leave the selection at “All” to find all drivers for your system.
- The search results will appear beneath the search fields listing what the driver applies to, whether it is essential or recommended, and its release date and version. When you find the driver you are looking for, click Add to Download.
- Once all of the drivers are on your Download list, begin your download and follow the onscreen installation instructions. You may be required to restart your system.
