If you have recently upgraded to the latest version of Windows through the purchase of a new computer you may be experiencing the frustration of moving your files and media to your new PC. You can also experience problems with the new operating system, however, even if it is on your old PC. One of the most common Windows 7 problems is that you may have trouble using some older programs on this new operating system, and here are some ways that you can make these programs work on your new PC.

What is Program Compatibility and Why is it Important?

Most software programs that were developed for Window XP and Vista are compatible with the new operating system 7, but if you have been running an older version than that, or have several programs that were designed for older version of Windows you are likely going to encounter this problem. Fortunately there is a handy Windows operating system function that is designed to help you troubleshoot through this problem.

Program Compatibility Wizard

To make your older programs run in Windows 7 simply run the Program Compatibility Wizard. To do this

Click Start > Control Panel > Programs > Use an older program with this version of Windows

This will prompt with Program Compatibility Wizard to open in a new window and simply follow the instructions which are similar to most Windows Wizard applications.

Manually Checking Compatibility

If you only have one program that is incompatible, or you are not sure whether compatibility is the problem or not, them you can manually check the compatibility of your programs in Windows 7. To do this simply…

Right Click the program icon > Properties > Compatibility

From here you can change a number of the program settings to make it work better, or at all in Windows 7. This includes

Compatibility Mode

This will run the program using the settings from a previous version of Windows. This is your best option if you know the program is designed for a specific previous version of Windows.

Run in 256 colors

Limits the set of colors used in the program as most older programs were designed for this color setting.

Run in 640 × 480 Screen Resolution

Runs the program in a smaller window which will help if the program interface appears pixilated or jagged.

Privilege Level Allows you to run the program as an administrator, which is required by many older programs to run as intended.

These simple and quick fixes should have you using your favorite programs before you know it. If these steps don’t work you may want to consider upgrading to a new version of the software, or perhaps look up the program online to get tips direct from the manufacturer of the program itself.
