This particular mysterious error comes from BitDefender, an anti-virus program. It most often means that your download of BitDefender failed at some point during installation. And when that occurs, it corrupts the whole package, rendering it useless.

To fix this, you’ll have to uninstall your current version of BitDefender and then reinstall it.

Uninstall

To uninstall BitDefender:
1. Go to your Start button and click on Control Panel.
2. Click on Add/Remove programs.
3. Scroll down to find BitDefender. Click on it.
4. An “uninstall” button will appear. Click on this.
5. Once the uninstall process is over, restart your computer.

Download BitDefender Uninstall Tool

BitDefender also offers users a free uninstall tool that you can use rather than your Windows Add/Remove option.

1. Go to BitDefender’s web site to download the uninstall tool.
2. Once the download is complete find the location of the uninstall tool on your system and double click it.
3. When the uninstall window opens, click “Uninstall.”
4.  Once the window shows you a successful completion message, you can restart your PC.

Reinstall BitDefender

Once the corrupt package has been removed from your computer, you’re clear to reinstall. Go to BitDefender’s web site to download the complete setup kit.

Once BitDefender is downloaded on your PC you’ll need to install it and set it up.

1. You will be alerted if you have another antivirus program installed on your computer. Click to remove the other product. (This is pretty important because if you are running your system with more than one antivirus product it can dramatically slow your operating speed to a crawl.) If you want to continue without removing the detected products, click Next.
2. Read the BitDefender License Agreement and then click “I agree.”
3. BitDefender Antivirus will be installed on your hard drive unless you click Browse and then choose the folder in which you would like BitDefender to be installed.
4. Click Next. A series of options for installation will appear regarding the installation process. These include:

  • Open readme file
  • Place a shortcut on the desktop
  • Turn off Windows Defender (this option appears only on Windows Vista)

5. Click Install in order to begin the installation of the product.

With a new, complete installation of BitDefender, you shouldn’t be seeing the “A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file c windows installer bdis.msi.” Problem solved!
