As each new version of Windows, AOL and Internet Explorer gets released, there are inevitably bugs not found or resolved during the testing phases. These errors most often involve the program interfaces. Other errors are found when new users install AOL for the first time. Below is a list of the most common errors found during the download and installation processes with AOL software:

  • “AOL has encountered an internal error. Restart your computer.” ERROR: SL4041.

    • Probable Causes - This error usually occurs when an outage has taken place during the installation of AOL or by a conflict with the system requirements for proper operation.

    • Suggested Resolutions – This error type can be fixed by simply closing AOL and re-launching it. If you still have an error, check to make sure your system meets the minimum AOL software system requirements here.

  • “COFEXXXX Error has been found. AOL must shut down.” (‘XXXX’ can be a large variety of numbers)

    • Probable Causes – There is a variety of errors that can produce this message. They range from windows conflicts to low memory availability among many others.

    • Suggested Resolutions – To resolve any of the COFE series of errors, clear cookies, cache and history. Restart AOL. If the issue has not been resolved re-boot your computer.

  • “502 Connection Failed”

    • Probable Causes – This error message is received when there is a conflict with the Internet Explorer security settings or when the Java Virtual Machine program is not installed on your system.

    • Suggested Resolutions – Launch Internet Explorer and click the tab for Internet Security. Set your security settings to their default condition by clicking the ‘Restore Default Settings’ button. If the problem is not resolved, download Java Virtual Machine for free here.

  • “AOL General Error”

    • Probable Causes – This general error can be caused by a large number of issues.

    • Suggested Resolutions – To fix a general error, shut down AOL through the AOL utilities and then re-launch the program. If the issue was not resolved, rebooting your system should solve the issue.

  • “AOL Loop Error”

    • Probable Causes – This error is caused during installation of AOL and causes the program to enter a loop and cause your system to freeze. It is most often caused by a corrupt AOL installation file.

    • Suggested Resolutions – Download or order a new AOL installation file and run the installation program again.

If the solutions above do not work with the version of AOL you are installing, it may be necessary to use an older version of AOL. When new Windows or AOL versions are released, you can often find fixes for newly discovered software bugs on the AOL download page found here.
