Use Windows Faster: Top 10 Ways to Use the "RUN" Command
Use Windows Faster: Top 10 Ways to Use the "RUN" Command
The Runtime Command is one of the most useful and least used features of the Windows Operating System. It allows Windows users to quickly open files and run programs without clicking on icons or creating shortcuts on the desktop. It is a simple and quick way to make using your PC easier, and it makes using your mouse or laptop touchpad less necessary.
To access the Run command in Windows you can either select the Run function from the Start menu in older versions of the Windows Operating System or by hitting the Winkey+r to open the Run Command Window. From there you can type in one of the following commands.
1. Open a webpage without opening Internet Explorer

This is perhaps one of the most useful, but least used Run Command functions. Simple type in the address you are looking to navigate to and hit OK. This will either launch Internet Explorer if it is not open, or open a new tab.
2. Open the Control Panel

This is a useful shortcut from which you can access all the functions of the Control Panel including Windows Updates and your Network Settings, just to name a few.
3. Open the Disk Cleanup Manager

The Disk Cleanup Manager allows you to quickly and efficiently cleanup disk space in your hard drive.
4. Add/Remove Programs

In most cases if you are adding a program this application will run on its own, but it is a handy shortcut to know for those time times when it doesn’t, or when you quickly want to remove a program.
5. Open the Calculator

There are a number of times when you may want to quickly open the Windows Calculator application whether it’s figuring out the tax on an item you are purchasing online or doing your taxes.
6. Open Windows Explorer

7. Open My Documents, My Pictures or My Videos

This is probably one of the most useful Run Commands on the list as these files are usually the most accessed on your PC. The Command for My Pictures and My Videos is the same as My Documents, and can be accessed by simply typing pictures or videos.
8. Open various Office applications

Like the last Run Command, this is a great one to know as you are likely to use these programs frequently. For Excel simply type excel, and for PowerPoint type powerpnt.
9. Access Windows Security

If you are experiencing any Runtime Errors or suspect that your PC's security may have been compromised, being able to quickly access the Windows Security Center can make fixing these problems faster and easier.
10. Log off or Shut Down Windows

Being able to log out of Windows quickly can really be a handy function, and by simply typing logoff in the Run Command window you can accomplish this. You can also quickly turn your PC off by typing shutdown.
These are just a few of the literally hundreds of Runtime Command you can use to make using your PC faster and more efficient!
