There comes a time in every computer owner’s life when they ask themselves: Do I need more RAM? For those of you who follow up the first question with “What is RAM anyway?” RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the physical memory of a computer. It’s called “random access” because data on any memory cell can be accessed at any time, rather than having to sequentially retrieve data. The more RAM you have, the more data your laptop can store and the faster it can run, at least, up to a point.

What kind of RAM do I have?

Rather than tearing your laptop apart to find out what kind and how much RAM you have, you can visit Belarc. Belarc Advisor is a free download that will tell you how much RAM you have, what kind of RAM you have, and which memory slots are occupied.

Belarc’s profile of your laptop will also include other useful information like where potential weak s pots in your system are (virus software in need of an update, whether known Windows security flaws have been fixed). Belarc keeps your PC’s profile se cure and doesn’t share your information with any third parties so it is a pretty safe and smart option for determining your RAM usage.

So how do you know if you need it? PCs running XP will need at least 512MB to 1GB of RAM. Older systems can get by on less. Newer ones could probably use a bit more.

Where can I find it?

Once you’ve determined what kind of RAM you have, you’ll want to start researching places to buy additional RAM. You don’t have to buy directly from the manufacturer. Pricing online is generally pretty competitive. Just be SURE you are purchasing the right type of RAM.

If you need a little help, you can visit Crucial or Pacbell.net. They can give you some shopping suggestions based on your system.

How do I install it?

Very carefully. OK, here’s the specifics.

1. Shut down your laptop, but leave it plugged in.

2. Unplug any accessories (mouse, printer, etc.) and remove the computer cover on the bottom of your laptop with a screwdriver.

3. Watch your static, it can fry the RAM! Either invest in a grounding wristband, or make sure you maintain contact with the metal innards of your case.

4. Hold your memory module by the ends (don’t open the RAM casing because you may void the warranty!) line up the slot key notch on the memory module with the slot key in the laptop.

5. Slide the module into the slot and when you are sure it is positioned correctly, press down on it gently. The ejector clips should automatically engage.

6. Leaving the cover off in case there are problems, reconnect all of your exterior devices and then restart your laptop.

7. You can check your RAM to make sure it is now the correct number by restarting your computer, right-clicking on My Computer, and opening Properties.
